Selecting an Aluminum Boat

While you may have spent most of your life fishing from the shore there comes a time where you realize that it’s time to purchase a fishing boat. As you sit and watch all the boats set off for better fishing holes from the dock, you know that the time is now. There are many different things you will need to consider before diving in and buying your new boat.

The first thing you should determine is the budget you have available for this project. When it comes to them there are two main types: fiberglass and aluminum. The type that is best for you will depend on the type of fishing you enjoy. The main question to ask is if you spend your time in salt or fresh water.

Aluminum boats, especially unpainted ones, do not work well in salt water. While they are usually less expensive than fiberglass boats, they do not hold up well in salt water due to corrosion and salt build up between the rivets. If you must purchase aluminum for salt water fishing consider buying one of the all welded types as they will last longer.

The next thing you need to think about is how far your boat will need to travel. Aluminum boats have a lighter construction and will give you better fuel efficiency, but their shape does not allow for a large built in gas tank for longer trips. You can, however, purchase fuel storage containers to take with you.

Another consideration you will have when choosing a fishing boat is how much space you will need, both for passengers and storage. This will help you determine the proper size of boat to purchase, either fiberglass or aluminum.
